In the 2004/05 fiscal year, sales of approximately 1.2 billion Euros were recorded in the machine tools business division alone. The core business is flexible sheet metal machining for die cutting and forming, laser machining and bending. TRUMPF is the technology and world-market leader in the field of industrial lasers and laser systems. With over 40 subsidiary companies and branch offices, the group is represented in almost all European countries, in North and South America, and in Asia. Production sites are located in Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Taiwan, China and the USA.

TopSolid'Cam and Trumpf

TRUMPF currently deploys TopSolid'Cam at six sites in Germany, Switzerland , Austria , France and the USA.

Additional licenses for the upgrade of the 3D-Cam workstations in Pasching, Ditzingen, Hettingen and Baar were ordered in July 2005.

Missler Software and the Swiss reseller NC Data visited the TRUMPF production site in Baar , Switzerland in June, in order to familiarize themselves with the use and the successes of TopSolid'Cam from Missler Software. They were received there by Axel Köhler, who takes care of worldwide CAD/CAM coordination at TRUMPF, and Hannes Bürgi, the TopSolid'Cam key user located in Baar.

At the TRUMPF Machinen AG in Baar assemblies for laser, bending, welding and punching machines are manufactured. Smaller machines are designed and produced entirely in Baar.

After extensive training in November 2003, TopSolid'Cam has been used successfully by 4 programmers since December 2003. GOelan, the previous CAM software used by Trumpf, is also edited by Missler Software, It has recently been replaced by TopSolid'Cam, an integrated software solution better satisfying the current needs of the company. In addition, TopSolid'Cam enables multiple part machining, and thus more economical production.

Start up times reduced by 50% thanks to TopSolid

The introduction of TopSolid'Cam at Baar is nearly complete, and Hannes Bürgi is quite satisfied with the course of the project to date. The main advantage is the significantly shorter start-up time, which has been reduced by 50% with TopSolid'Cam. Since it costs approximately 100 Euros/hour to operate the machine, it is vital that machines are operational at all times and thereby fully optimized.

The reduced start-up times are mainly a consequence of the optimal interaction of design and manufacturing. The parts and assemblies manufactured in Baar are 60% programmed and simulated using TopSolid'Cam. Thus, possible mistakes or collisions are identified on the computer and not for the first time after the machine start-up, and can be fixed immediately.

Furthermore, TopSolid's simulation capacities support the cooperation between programmer and machine operator. Problems with the machine can be predicted, ambiguities in the production process can be analysed and solutions can be found. All in all, confidence in the programming system is increased for the machine operator in this manner, and provokes" no more struggles between programmer and machine operator". However, if at some point changes must be made in retrospect, the design changes prove to be relatively simple with the assistance of the shaping function and the revision of profiles and surfaces.

An additional major advantage of TopSolid'Cam is the expanded process options such as drilling, spot facing and threading. Hannes Bürgi and his team can save up to 80% of their programming time here.Hannes Bürgi says: "I am very happy with TopSolid'Cam. It is a very rich software package, and I learn something new about it every day. What one can get from this system is incredible." In his role, Mr. Bürgi is supported by Mr. Biener and Mr. Adam, among others, who take care of the demanding WFL machines.

TopSolid'Cam's ability to drive multi-function machines is a key element for TRUMPF

TRUMPF in the USA, France and Germany are also equipped with TopSolid'Cam

A wide range of interfaces with TopSolid

The integration of the TDM tool management from TDM Systems was also decisive for the success of TopSolid'Cam at TRUMPF. An interface has been developed between TDM and TopSolid'Cam. Thus the tool data can be generated and maintained at the first stage in TDM, and are accessible at the global level for the TRUMPF Group as well. In the second step, the data is integrated into TopSolid'Cam, and a volume model of the tool is provided with the assistance of the geometric data.

TopSolid'Cam has all standard interfaces such as IGES, STEP, ACIS, Parasolid, etc., as well as native direct interfaces to Solid Works, Catia, PTC, etc. TopSolid is thus integrated into the in-house TRUMPF process chain without problems. The highest data quality remains preserved with digital transfer of component information.

Axel Köhler, CAD/CAM coordinator, reports that TopSolid'Cam also fulfills the high global flexibility demands of the TRUMPF Group. TRUMPF machine tools are produced with assemblies. The production of an assembly can be shifted to another production site for logistical or commercial reasons. In this case, the corresponding production data can be correspondingly transmitted without problems, and the assemblies can be exchanged. The local distribution partner NCData GmbH, Schlieren, organises product training tailored specifically for the TRUMPF Group, and is available as a contact at all times for emerging questions with great technical know-how and long-term experience.
